Top Five Test Cricket Batsman of 2014

Cricket is popular sports in India, although it is not a national sports. There are three format in which this particular game is played that is Test cricket, One Day International and Twenty-twenty. Test cricket match is one of the toughest format in sports.

The top five test cricket batsman according to the International Cricket Council (ICC) players ranking 2014 are:

AB de Villiers

A South African cricketer Abraham Benjamin de Villiers, who captains the South African One Day International (ODI) team is the leading batsman with 922 rating point in the ICC test cricket ranking.

A right-handed batsman AB de Villiers was born on February17, 1984 and has played 94 test matches and scored 7289 runs including 19 centuries and 36 fifties. He has debut his test career against England at Port Elizabeth, South Africa on December 17, 2004 in which he accumulated 28 and 14 runs in respective innings. After Hashim Amla, de Villiers has scored 278 runs in an innings against Pakistan at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi, which is the second-highest individual score by South African batsman. He is one of the most successful and key player of the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League. A wicketkeeper batsman, de Villiers has played 14matches and scored 395 runs in IPL 2014.

Kumar Sangakkara

Second leading batsman in the ICC test cricket ranking is Kumar Chokshanada Sangakkara with 879 rating points. A former caption of Sri Lankan team was born on October 27, 1977. He is popularly known as one of the greatest batsman in Sri Lankan team. Apart from Sri Lanka team, he is also an important player of the Asia XI, ICC World XI and Sunrisers Hyderabad. A wicketkeeper and left-handed batsman has played 126 test matches, scored 11665 runs including 36 centuries and 50 fifties. Sangakkara made his debut on July 20, 2000 at Galle International Stadium, Sri Lanka against South Africa in which he has scored 23 runs in the first innings and the team won the match by an innings and 15 runs. This was also a debut match for South African player ND McKenzie. He is the fastest Sri Lankan batsman to reach 8,000, 9,000, and 11,000 runs in Test cricket. In 2012, he was named as ICC Cricketer of the Year and Test Cricketer of the Year.

S Chanderpaul

The first Indo-Caribbean cricketer Shivnarine Chanderpaul, played 100 Tests for the West Indies cricket team is ranked third with 876 rating point. He was born in Unity Village, Guyana on August 16, 1974. A left-handed batsman made his debut at Bourda, Georgetown, Guyana on March 17, 1994 against England in which he scored 62 runs in the first innings and the team won this match by an innings and 44 runs. A former captain of the West Indies cricket team has played 156 test matches and scored 11414 runs including 29 centuries and 63 fifties.After Vivian Richards, Adam Gilchrist, Jack Gregory, Chanderpaul is the fourth batsman who has scored fastest test century from 69 balls against Australia at Bourda, Guyana in 2003. During his caption-ship, he scored 203 not out against Bangladesh in November 2012, which is the highest score of his Test career. At the age of 19, Chanderpaul started his career with a couple of problems but now he is the second West Indian to score 10,000 Test runs.

Hashim Amla

After AB de Villiers, a right-handed top order South African batsman Hashim Mohammad Amla has been ranked fourth with 873 rating points by the ICC in test cricket. He is the first South African batsman to score a Test match triple century with 311 not out against England in 2012. He was born on March 31,1983 in South African Indian Muslim family, which has roots in Gujarat. After Ashwell Prince, Amla was the second non-white to lead the South African team ahead of the Sri Lanka tour.He has played 78 test matches and scored 6411 runs including 22 centuries and 27 fifties. He debut his test career at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on November 28, 2004 against India, and scored 24 and 2 runs in respective innings, India won the match by 8 wickets. Amla is the first South African Captain to score a test century against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka.

David Warner

An Australian cricketer, David Andrew Warner is currently ranked as the world’s number 5 batsman in Test cricket. He was born on October 27, 1986. Apart from Australia, he is also the key player for the Sunrisers Hyderabad, New South Wales and the Sydney Thunder. Adangerous opening batsman has played 30 test matches and scored 2467 including 8 centuries and 12 fifties. Making his debut in testcricket, Warner scored only 3 and 12 not out in respective innings at Brisbane Cricket Ground, Woolloongabba, Brisbane on December 1, 2011. Warner is the fifth batsman of the world to score fastest century and fastest by an opener in Test cricket, off just 69 balls against India at the WACA in Perth in 2012.
